Willem de Kooning was a Dutch abstract expressionist artist who moved to the U.S. in 1926 and became one of the leaders of the New York avant-garde. Within his nearly seven decades as a successful artist, de Kooning pioneered the gestural, abstract style of Action Painting that became the staple of New York abstract expressionism.
